This fab ornament has been on my mind for while. Bright and fun I have made it in our gorgeous merino wool felt as I've intended it to be an heirloom. Choose your own colours and make a few to look beautiful en masse on your tree this Christmas. Supplies + 100% Merino Wool Felt Sheets + Contrasting DMC stranded thread + DMC Light Effects thread + Hobby Fill + Erasable Marker + Needle + Scissors + Tacky Glue + Dress My Craft Die- four petal pointed flower (optional) + Sizzix Framelits Die - Circles (optional) + Sizzix Framelits Die - Scalloped Circles (optional) + Christmas Ornament Pattern Directions 1. Print our Christmas Ornament Pattern, cut out pieces. Use erasable marker to trace around the pattern pieces onto the felt and cut out. 2. Cut die pieces or use pinking shears to cut a fancy edge. Use any shape you like for the center, a star or flower shape. I have used the middle sized die from Dress My Crafts four pointed petal flower die set. Super handy if you have a die cutting machine, otherwise freehand cut a shape to suit. 3. Use a little Tacky Glue to fix the pieces together so you're not chasing the small pieces around your craft bench. 4. Using three strands of DMC thread, start stitching you favourite stitches in contrasting colours. I have used lazy daisies, french knots and a straight stitch. Mix up your threads and try the Light Effects for a bit of bling, its a bit tricky to use but well worth the effort ;) 5. Stitch up three sides of the ornament using a whipstitch or a blanket stitch. On the fourth side stitch halfway closed so the top remains open for stuffing. Stuff your ornament with hobby fill or similar. 6. Finish stitching to the top of the ornament and tie off your thread. Take a length of 20cm of the Light Effects thread, stitch through the top of the ornament and knot for hanging. Have fun with this pattern by incorporating sequins and beads and different shapes and colours to suit your decor for the season.
I'd love to see what you make, tag me in your projects #thefeltfactorynz or pop me a photo. Bex :) Ages ago I made the boys and I stockings, and I love them, but moving house and a change in colour schemes, we needed a bit of an update. A bit more colour and a lot more felt was called for. I do love the traditional Christmas colours but I wanted something a bit more bright and modern. If you would like to make you own, print out my template and tape up along the join. Using my Wool Blend use 0.3m for a single stocking or 0.5m for two. Plus 0.1 per contrasting colour. And Felt Balls, I've used 1cm and 2cm. I used a straight stitch to attach the stripes and my trusty glue gun for the felt balls. Then a blanket stitch to join the front and back of the stocking. You can use a ribbon or the hanging tab on the pattern in felt. Cute little letters, a peppermint and a few tassels and voila! I'm going to have fun filling these this year.
Happy crafting Rebecca. I LOVE Christmas, everything about it. I love setting up my tree, decorating the house, all the Christmas parties with Michael Bubble on repeat! I also love making a few decorations or ornaments to add to my collection. I'm always looking for beautiful things to make and these are some of my favourites for Christmas this year. I absolutely LOVE Esty for patterns, super easy to download straight into your inbox, there are SO many clever makers selling their beautiful patterns on this fab platform from all over the world! Nuvolinahandmade is a pattern maker from Slovenia, with gorgeous pattern for softies ornaments and mobiles. Seriously cute! Noia Land is always on my favourites list, I absolutely love her whimsical style. I have a couple of her fairy patterns which are just SO lovely! And of course MMMcrafts is a firm favourite with her 12 Days Ornaments series. She has two more sets in the same beautiful style with Twas the Night and the Ebenezer Ornament Series. I still love a good paper pattern which I always have in the shop. May Blossom by Simone Gooding is one of my favourites with cute felt toys and ornaments in fresh colours. I can't wait to get into a few more of these.
Happy making and craft on! Rebecca xx I think its fair to say Larissa Holland's Twelve Days of Christmas ornaments have completely taken the craft world by storm. You can't Google "Christmas" and "felt" without seeing at least one of her beautiful designs. Her patterns are AMAZING, wonderfully detailed with gorgeous photos and diagrams which take you through the patterns step by step. These are perfect for novice and experienced stitcher's alike. These gorgeous projects have been popping up with crafters all over the country and I've had more and more clever people asking for colour advice for making. So, with great joy and anticipation I bought the collection off her Etsy site to make my own set in The Felt Factory colours. I know, it's tough work but someone has to do it! ;) The following blog, I hope, will be a great resource for making this set with our beautiful 100% Merino Wool Felt with suggestions for colours and quantities as well as thread suggestions and links to our fab products. This beautiful set of patterns can be purchased from mmmcraft Etsy store. Available singularly or as a collection. Etsy is brilliant, if you don't already have an account with them, it's super easy to set up, think Trade Me, then purchase and download the pdf patten. NB/ most patterns available from Esty are pdf files, not hard copy patterns. PS. This is the pattern which introduced me to Sticky Fabri-Solvi, THE best craft tool ever!!! Print your pattern straight out onto the sheet then stick it to the felt and stitch over the top. Once you've finished the stabiliser dissolves in water!!!! So handy. This is used throughout and is not mandatory but a fab tool. There are tips for using it and for using alternatives. PPS. Have fun with this pattern and Happy Halloween. Rebecca. xx I LOVE felt flowers! Big or small they are so fun are gorgeous for all sorts of projects. I've had a ton of fun trying out a couple of different methods and styles, I tell you, there are so many beautiful projects. Paper templates make beautiful hand cut flowers, there are also some great dies to use with a cutting machine. Of course, in the name of craft I had to try both. Paper Patterns The paper version was super simple, check out my Pintrest board for some great templates. I found the best way to attach the tricky little pattern to my felt was by taping it down, then cutting around the pattern. Start from one end and roll the felt up using a glue gun to secure it all together. Die Cut The die I used was the Spiral Flower from Sizzix, super easy to use. These dies are made for a Big Shot machine but will work through a Cuttlebug too. As with the handcut flower, start rolling and glue as you go. Easy peasy! The great thing about this type of spiral pattern is the versatility of it. I made a couple of variations using contrasting felt balls and a sparkly strip of glitter felt. Gorgeous! So, what to do with your felt flowers? You're only limited by your imagination! Put them on florist wire and in a vase, use them as flourishes on a quilt or wall hanging, hair accessories or something like this >> Happy Making! Bex xx OOoo it’s a bit chilly here in the Naki! There’s definitely a wiff of Autumn in the air, and with the weather closing in a bit, my mind always turns to little projects for a rainy day indoors. I have a few favourite go-to pattern makers for just this sort of crafty, short and sweet type of project. So if you need something in between larger projects or want something that will only take an afternoon or two, check these great makers out. Maisie Moo is a New Zealand pattern maker hailing from Tauranga. Her cute patterns are big on colour and on gorgeousness. Perfect for nursery and baby gifts, she suggests you use her patterns for bunting or mobiles, she also has some fun hoop art, perfect for kids walls. I spotted Trellis and Thyme in a Molly Makes magazine awhile back and fell in love with their fun range of kawaii style ornaments for every occasion. Their Esty shop has a wonderfully quirky selection of cross stitch patterns too. I was introduced to Wendy Williams patterns by a group of lovely quilters making one of her fabulous wool appliqué and fabric masterpieces. You might have seen my fun wee project with one of her Travel Threads patterns recently. She has a wonderful selection of little and very large projects to create. I spyed Mmmcrafts on Instagram just before Christmas, with her beautiful 12 Days ornament Series. Her gorgeous stitched felt ornaments are to die for! Fabulous projects for Christmas and beyond. I’m always on the lookout for wonderful projects, let me know your favourites. If you follow me on social media you might have noticed the Sugar Skull project I’ve been working on. I absolutely LOVE sugar skulls. The perfect craft for the season. Well, I’m finished! I made 8 of the cute we guys altogether and strung them up as a garland over the fire place. They are very cute and a little brighter than our usual orange, black and white for Halloween. Anyway, it's my absolute pleasure to share my pattern and a wee tutorial about what you'll need and how to put them together. So here goes. You will need:
Let’s go! Cut out the pattern and pin it to your felt. I’ve given you a couple of options for the forehead shapes, you will only need one per skull. Cut carefully around the patterns. Thread you embroidery needle with 3 strands of embroidery floss and sew the eye circles together, then fix the sequin or button. Sew the eyes and forehead shapes on to one skull shape using pins to hold them in place. Draw on the mouth lightly in pencil to stitch over, embellish around the temples. Use two lazy daisy stitches for the nose. Pin the two skull shapes together and blanket stitch around the outside leaving a gap to stuff. Stuff with hobby fill, then sew the gap closed. From here you can sew a loop at the top to hang or thread them all together for a garland. I used twine and a tapestry needle to do this. Finished. Extra Tips: You can hang these individually or thread them onto a garland. Increase the pattern size to make an appliqué for a cushion or blanket, even a wall hanging. These are totally customisable, choose bright contrasting colours or muted. Try out all your favourite embroidery stitches. Due to buttons or sequins they may not be suitable as toys for small children. Most of all have fun! Happy Crafting, Rebecca. |
